The oldest Football Club in the World

Herbertson Scrapes through Against the Oldest Football Team in the World

My Brother, Keith Herbertson donned the harlequinesque shirt of McCrae’s battalion Football team, last seen in 1916, to battle for a 3-2 victory against The Foot-ball Club of Edinburgh.

John Hope a 17 year old trainee lawyer, organised a season of games for this ‘Foot-Ball Club’, formed in Edinburgh.

The game involving 39 players, and ‘such kicking of shins and such tumbling’. Sticks marked the goals. The only surviving club rules forbade tripping, but allowed pushing holding and the lifting of the ball.

The subscription began at 1s. 6d. This paid for the hire of the park, the equipment and a boy, who probably blew up up the football but by all accounts, might have assisted the wounded and dying too. The most frequently purchased items were the bladders for the balls: They frequently burst.

The ball didn’t burst on this occasion. My brother, getting on in years but still fighting fit, helped the McCrae’s Battalion side to a hard fought victory and raised a few bob for ‘Cash for Kids’. You can even see him in the photo trying to straighten his back after a comrade had fallen by the wayside from exhaustion.

Jolly good fun though and I am going to trial for next year.

Irish Bars on the Edge

Posted in Good Places to go with tags , , , , , , , on February 4, 2008 by craigherbertson

These Irish bars are off the beaten track but well worth a visit. I have a personal bias of course, as I play in them occasionally.

The Druid’s Chair, Alzey is a new pub, next to the railway station, run by an ex musician, Juergen, and his lovely lady. Juergen has a sound appreciation of good music and there’s always something cool on the jukebox if not on the live stage. The guiness is also good because the taps are so short. Worth a visit.

The Blackwater, Winterberg is a fantastic bar,  run by Dan and his lovely wife. The reason I like this place so much is that it has been designed by a genius. Everything is accessible, intimate, friendly but you can still see the footie on the big screen or the live musicians from every chair. Dan is a perfectionist who has stamped his personality on the pub. Food’s good, beer’s good, atmosphere on a Saturday night is electric.

Celtic Inn, Burgdorf is one of the unsung greats of German pubs. Its actually not an Irish bar but, as Geoff points out, there are more celts than meet the eye. Good food, regular live music, intimate and friendly. If you go, come prepared to support Hannover as they’re rarely off the big screen on a Saturday.

Since writing this the Celtic Inn has closed down. sad stuff as it was a nice friendly bar. I should add this bar

Another goodie and quite new is Mulenhems Inn in Muleheim an der Rhur. The food is fantastic, with a well stocked larder of crisps and chocolate and all things for the English speaker. The Guinness is good and the customers are a friendly bunch. The website is here
